Our mission

We believe every young person who has experience of care deserves the same chances and hopes for the future as anyone else.

We’re here to:

  • cheer you on
  • support your learning and wellbeing
  • help you feel confident about your future

How we support you

  1. Putting education first

Your education is important, and we make sure everyone involved in your life knows that. We keep an eye on your progress, attendance and wellbeing so you can get help early and have the best chance to succeed.

  2. Working with schools and colleges

We work with early years settings, schools, colleges, university and training providers to help them understand your needs, recognise your strengths and give you the right support.

  3. Personal Education Plans (PEPs)

All young people in care have a regular PEP meeting. If you’re in care or a care leaver in Year 13, we help organise your PEP. This is your own learning plan with your goals and the support identified for you to achieve. Your voice and opinions are really important in this process.

  4. Support for post‑16 and care experienced young people over 18

Our support does not stop when you leave care. We help with key transitions like college, university or training choices, finding work or work experience and building the skills you need as you become an adult.

  5. Advice for carers and professionals

We give training, guidance and support to the adults who help you - like foster carers, social workers, designated teachers and personal advisors, so they can give you the best support possible.

The Virtual School

The Virtual School is a team at BCP Council that helps children and young people who are in care, previously looked after children and care experienced with their education, employment and training opportunities.

We are not a real school building you go to - instead, we work with schools, college or alternative provision, social workers, carers and parents to make sure you get the support you need and champion your progress.

How to meet with a Virtual School Education Officer

If you’re in Year 12 or 13

You will meet your Virtual School Education Officer once every term at your PEP meeting. You can also contact them anytime if you need extra help or have questions.

If you’re in Year 14+ (19-25)

You can ask your PA to help you book a meeting, or you can email virtual.school@bcpcouncil.gov.uk to set one up. Meetings can be in person or online, depending on what you prefer and where you live.

333 drop‑in

You can also go to the weekly drop‑in at 333. You can just pop in for a chat and get support with things like education, finding work and training. Your personal adviser can tell you more about when it happens and what it’s like.
